Wise Grasshoppa's Revenge
For the record, I am NOT a bug enthusiast.
It's just when you own a macro lens, you tend to look for little things to shoot. Somewhat neurotically. And in case you haven't noticed, I'm a wee wacko for macro.
Whatev.
I was picking tomatoes from our garden when Toddler found and wanted to befriend this wise grasshoppa.
I ran inside to get my camera, swapped lenses and was surprised to find him still posing (and even alive) when I returned.
As I fired off a few shots, Toddler's 2 seconds of patience expired and he went in for the grasshopper grab. Wise grasshoppa lunged at me and landed smack in the middle of my lens.
I jumped. I FREAKED. I made a fool of myself. The neighbor was concerned there was a fire. So yeah, this may be my last bug shot.
And look at his expression in the shot, doesn't it appear he's staring ME down? Grasshat.
He does have a mean look in his eyes-- Or it could be fear- disguised!
OH MY HECK MAMAGEEK!
I MUST have you over to teach me your skills!!
What lens did you use for this shot?
Good Golly - this is FAB-U-LOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It goes without say that you will produce a fabulous shot and equally fabulous and clever words to go with it every week.
But DUDE. Grasshat? That made me laugh so much that my family is demanding an explanation.
And I think it might be my new favorite word.
Ditto to cecily r. I don't know what is more 'perfect', that shot or the word grasshat. I think a tie is in order.
I'm really interested in what lens(es) and other equipment you own? Is that posted somewhere?
If it's your last bug one, you sure as hell have gone out with a bang!
Awesome photo! I want so badly to be a decent photographer. I guess I should start with a decent camera. Great one!
Awesome photo! I want so badly to be a decent photographer. I guess I should start with a decent camera. Great one!
I was taking photos of a grasshopper this morning too! But I don't have a macro lens...yet. And I would also freak if it landed on my lens!
OOh, He does look like he was giving you the evil eye.
That's a fantastic shot of a grasshopper! You are brave! I HATE grasshoppers. When I was a kid, I had this terrible phobia that grasshoppers would jump on to my eyes and all I would see would be grasshoppers everywhere.
Yeah, I didn't really think it through, logically. Such was my fear.
How cool would it have been if you could have taken a picture of him ON your lens? I think it's a great shot.
Great picture, cute story.
I do not like hopping bugs eithe.
I seriously see your photos and shake my head thinking how in the heck do you get these amazing photos???
All I can say is WOW!! That is really cool. Even if it is a bug.
LOL, I can just picture you jumping back. Where's the lens shot. Awesome shots though.
He does look like he is looking at you and saying, "what choo lookin' at?"
I am totally dropping 'grasshat' into casual conversation tomorrow!
I spent yesterday afternoon photographing a bug that I have no clue what it was but it was SCARY, totally! I had my son on stand by for just that reason you described with the grasshopper/fire situation! I think you would have heard me there had it landed anywhere on my person. And yes, my lens is on my person. :)
I'm glad you got such a nice shot for your terror. :) You'll never forget it!
First off - I WANT THAT LENS - I WANT THAT LENS - I WANT TO BE ABLE TO TAKE PICTURES LIKE YOU!
That is a great picture and cute story - you crack me up!
Have a good weekend - see you - Kellan
Much too close for me. You should never see the eye of a bug staring at you like that.
That is awesome!!! It looks like a painting. I can't believe that's real! I mean just AWESOME!
WITHOUT a tripod?
Perfection.
Holy Crap! I REALLY want that lens. No. I don't think I do. I wouldn't get anything done...even less than I get done now! What a freakin awesome picture! And no. I don't like bugs either!! You sure got talent, girl!!
cool photo - but ew. I do not like bugs. Does a grasshopper count as a bug? It is still.... icky.
How cool! :) I never realized how much I liked the macro feature until I didn't have it! Luckily my new camera has it.
Awesome bug shot.
No pic of him ON the lens???!!!
tee hee...funny story! My post is about bugs as well. NOt as great of a shot though.
wonderful photo!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the laugh! Is it bad that I'm sorry the neighbor didn't have their camera handy?? The same fate has befallen me....I get scared out of my wits and someone else thinks its funny and takes a picture. Not nice, I tell them!
Great photo, as always!!
wonderful photo, as always!! and the story was just simply funny to even keep a straight face (I am at quite a public area surfing on free WiFi..heheh)
Love the photo! I am becoming a macro wacko too! Bugs photograph so nicely most of the time that it's hard not to look for them.
I'll be out and about on Friday, but fear not, I will get to everyone's postings!
Happy Friday!
He IS staring you down! That is an awesome shot and if I had a macro lens (or whateva) I'd be addicted too. WAY addicted.
Did he tell his agent NO PAPARAZZI???? ;)
Wow! What a pic! You can see the water droplets on him and everything! Awesome!
me thinks the shrieking was totally worth it - AMAZING shot! i'm not as late to the party as i thought i would be!
grasshoppers are of the devil.
grasshat!! HILARIOUS!!!!
That is a "You're going DOWN" look if I've ever seen one!
Totally explains the jump towards your face. :)
That is a great capture *AND* a great story to go with it! He does have his eye on you.......
Perry's Daily Photo Blog
Perry's Black & White Photo Blog
Hmm, he definitely looks like he's contemplating something there. A death wish perhaps... ;)
That's a gorgeous photo - you're making me really, really wish I had a D-SLR... Sigh. :)
Don't let them `bug' you!!
Ooh nice shot. And brave too! I like the little beads of dew on its back. Good stuff!
You are the most fantastic photographer! That is an incredible picture. I love it!
I love my macro lens, too...
We must have been on the same page this week, because I posted a bug shot, too. But he's not a friendly grasshoppa, he's a killa.
Man that's an AWESOME shot. I drool over that macro lens. One day I will get one. However, I am with you on bugs, love to look at them and photo them, but have them touch me, not so much!
Haha! He certainly does look like he is figuring out the best way to freak you out!
GRASSHAT!!!!!
I love it!!!!!
My first time participating! This is a great idea!
Love your grasshopper macro photo. I really need to pick your brain about lenses.
Ditto on the grasshat. That's fudgin hilarious! Seriously... just shot coffee out of my nose.
That dude's so looking at you like, "Yea, that chirp that you won't be able to find later? That'll be me. Sucka."
Oh my gosh! Good thing you didn't drop the camera! It's actually cute to take pictures of bugs, but if they jump, that's a different story. =)
grasshat.
*snort*
You lucky macro lens owner, you!
I'm going to suggest you don't swear off bugs totally. Maybe just avoid the ones with the strong back legs!
Yes, it is starting at you. It is planning its jump at you.
I love love LOVE your macro shots. I drool over them every week, and become further convinced that I MUST have a macro lens ASAP!
That's hilarious! I'm just glad you didn't drop the camera (I would have)!
HaaaaaHaaaaa! He was calling you out! Great pic though:)
MamaGeek You are so stinkin witty. Grasshat. I will be laughing at that one all day.
KEEP BELIEVING
you may not be a bug fanatic and even jump and do funny stuff if they get too close.
But you sure did get a pretty good capture with all the details crisp and clear.
What lens were you using?
Macro is fun but I was looking at macro lenses and they are kind of pricey...
Love how big you guys are getting with PSF, and as for the grasshopper story........I think it's my fav PSF of yours ever. The picture is so great, and then it's funny, too! :)
he does have that "i'm going to kick your grass" kind of look. eeeeevil, those grasshoppers! i'm so relieved you lived to tell!
Grasshoppers are so cute! Glad you were able to get a shot and he didn't jump away.
I'll just put it out there, I want your macro lens!
That is an awesome shot (and funny story)
Mamageek, I hereby pronounce you QUEEN of macro photography!!! That is one awesome picture and one very funny story to go with it! Very, very well done and many thanks for this piece of excellent entertainment!
Dude.
Grasshoppers freak me out.
I used to spray Papaw's cotton in the summer.
They were the size of my fist.
They'd jump in my hair.
I'd scream like a sissy.
"grasshat" omg, that is hilarious. Grasshat. ROFLMAO.
I love Grasshoppers. Sorry, but I do. :) Love the shot!
I love Grasshoppers. Sorry, but I do. :) Love the shot!
girl.. can I just say you are genius. Tomato picking, with toddler and camera in hand. I am vigorously taking notes.
Ugh, don't like bugs leaping at me. But that is a SERIOUSLY cool picture.
Ha ha! That's hilarious!!!!! GREAT photo!
So I got up early this morning and headed outside to water the plants and what did I find? The greenest lil grasshoppa eva! I ran into the house, leaving doggie behind in hopes that she wouldn't eat him prior to my return, got my camera and when I came back there he was, still in the same darned spot I left'm -- unscathed.
Thrilled I was. Living in the desert does sometimes bring color....It. Made. My. Day. Then I decide to check out your blog and what should I find? Sigh. We're the coolest, huh. Accept my foto is of the prettiest green buggie on the deadest palm tree in the yeard...so beit. You win.
Have a grand weekend, friend. It was nice to see you again. *lovies* Now, back to my writing.
I love bugs so I am glad you have the micro. I don't love spiders though and would hate to see a closeup.
Ok you made me laugh out loud at work. The wise grasshopper chose an unwise direction of escape! I can't believe he ran head long into your lens of all things!
Hilarius!
He definitely looks like he would have eaten you if you'd been the size of an ant!
I believe that bug had it in for you. My guess is that the "jump for the lens" was no accident. I'd watch my back if I were you. He probably knows where you live!
It's as though he knows he's being photographed! Fabulous shot! Wow!
~melody~
Very neat picture. Nothing stays still for me. You're lucky!
Like a dog, he senses the fear...watch your back!
OMW stunning! I want to know what lens you use!
ROTFL! He is totally staring you down! Great story. I'd have been jumping and screaming like a crazy woman too. What a tremendous shot! Glad he waited around. :D
Exquisite colors...all greens, yet not one alike. Love it! Clapppsss, Cheersss...hats off or should I see grasshat off!
Oh but that just looks so cool
I love your macro bug shots - such awesome bugness you are capturing. Of course...I hate bugs, but YOU make them look so interesting! :)
that is a great macro. I am abit crazy for the macro too!
Great story and photo... Love that Grasshoppa!!
You so funny.
You know grasshoppers can't really hurt you, right? ; )
Coolest shot as per usual...
Love the macro shots & love the grasshoppa!
first time with photostory friday but think I will love it.
thanks!
Mmm. You really know how to shoot macro.
45 mins to the end of PSF (in this timezone anyway).
Better late than never.
He does look a little miffed if you really look close... I would've loved to have the screaming photographer shot though :-)
Gorgeous shot again, you inspire me!
he he
and that macro lense incredible
hahahaha! I could see something like that totally happening to me. Great picture though!
Grasshat indeed! Great shot nonetheless! I wish that whole scene had been videoed though. Sounds funny!
Wow, 88 comments??? I'm not worthy...
I was going to tell you that this photo is quite topical for me today. My little Bodhi boy (my bulldog) went out and sniffed a grasshopper tonight. When he raised up, the grasshopper leapt up into his mouth and gagged up. He coughed out a big grasshopper, much to his surprise. Then he promptly ate it. Ugh!
Peace - D
You have mad skills! Your pictures are so professional!!
Wow, I am just amazed at that shot. AMAZED. And I love this idea.
"And still alive," I love that!
Your Grasshat shot is fabulous.
Very clever.
That is an amazing shot! You have me dying for a macro lens like that!! Wow! You must share with me what lens you used because this is just stunning.
This may be one of my favorite shots of yours.
Happy weekending friend.
That is one of the most awesome shots I have seen. Very crisp and clear. And yes, it looks like you are being stared down by a bug!
Over from David's where you gave a great Sunday Roast. You are a fantastic photographer. I'll be back.
Oh what a shot of the wise one. Laughing my bum off at the story! :D
Amazing detail! Look at those triangles on the legs. Wow, impressive as always!
I just read your interview over at Authorblog - good one!
Your photographs are amazing! I had a quick scroll through. :)
Wow! What a great shot. I would have freaked too! :D
Another great photo and story. Must have looked like giant mega human killing grasshopper through the macro lens!
LOOOVE the picture of Mr. Grasshoppa!! Mine is up . . a little late!
That is the exact kind of grasshopper they had when we were in Florida, Gulf of Mexico, last summer. They are amazing, but quite creepy in size....
This is an awesome shot, Mamageek! I did stare at it for few seconds. Well done!

I just viewed your Wacko 4 Macro slide show and I loved it. Ok, tell me the kind of camera and lens...I'm in the market. Thanks, Claudia
Hehe, the grasshopper really does look like it's glaring, saying, "Hey, whatcha doin stickin this camera in my face?"
