How To Remove Blood Stains
Wow, I never imagined I'd be writing that post title. I suddenly feel like a Soprano.
Recently, our dog was ill and got blood on our white carpet. Happy days have since returned and he's fine.
Vinegar with water is an excellent all around stain remover, but it did not remove the blood stain.
After doing research, we poured household salt (or sea salt) directly onto the bloody area. The salt completely absorbed the stain. We then vacuumed up the salt and voila, the stain was gone. As an FYI, the stain should be wet, if it's not simply pour cold water on it first. It worked for us.
Good to know. Hopefully a tip I will never have to use.
I'm with Jill. Good tip but hopefully won't have to use it!
Really, hmmph. Did NOT know THAT!
I'm ashamed to say this, but in my house this is very useful information!
Thanks for the tip.
Do you think Kosher salt would work? :)
Ellen - Yes! :)
My children have nosebleeds all the time. Getting blood off of light-colored carpet is a common activity at our house. I have never heard of this salt idea before. It sounds worth a try. There are two things that work for us: 1. Spot Shot Instant Carpet Stain Remover. This comes in a can with an orange top. It works really well. 2.The Bissell Spotbot. That was the best $100 we ever spent. With small children who are bleeding, spitting up, pottytraining, and breaking jars of tomato sauce on the (lightcolored!) carpet, this has saved my sanity and my children.
What a great tip! I'll have to remember that. I wonder if it would work on a really stubborn stain I have that's melted ice pop. Ta for now dahling!
And so simple. We all have salt in our cupboards. Thanks.
I wonder if that would work on old stains if you wet them...
I would have never thought of that.
Great idea- we always have sea salt in our house!
I'm going to have to try this! My son got blood on his bedroom floor from a bloody nose!
Great tip! Oh, and I think it's cute that yor son is a Bear as well. Hope doggy is feeling better.
Great Tip! You know...this trick works for red wine too!

Nice. Your spit will also help dissolve your blood.
(yes, I've been known to wake up during a monthly and spit on the bed - it's gross ... but it works.)
Oh, ammonia works too - just smells horrid.
Good to know! My son has nosebleeds a lot and I have also found hydrogen peroxide also works wonders on blood. Amazing the things I have discovered since becoming a parent :)
That's good to know! Hydrogen peroxide works too :)
Never tried that, but I am sure I will have an opportunity. Thanks!
Hooray! I'm glad your pup is fine!
Great tip too, salt is awesome.
Wow that's good to know! Thanks for the FYI! My son soiled his uniform shirt when his finger got cut and I couldn't take out the stain for the life of me. I wonder if 3 washes later if this will still work. If it doesn't, at least I'll know for next time.
I love simple solutions. My favorite way to get stains out of carpet is not to have any. Carpet. I'm all about the hard floors.
Thanks for the tip! And, by the way, as a HUGE Soprano's fan, I never saw Tony or the others use this techique after whacking someone!
I have been gathering so many great cleaning tips using everyday products. Pretty soon the only products in my cleaning bucket will be baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and salt.
What a great tip! It's great to know that I works on other stains too!
Happy Wednesday!
Good ol' Dyson strikes again. I'll have to make a note of this for the inevitable future messes :-(
I'd never heard of that. That's great. Thanks for passing it on.
Ah, now that I know how to clean it, I fear my son will spill some--hopefully his own and not his sister's!
Never used it on blood. We do you that on red wine.
On blood we use milk.
But I'll try your tip.
Thanks!!!
I learn something new every day.
I'm curious to know if any sketchy people are going to end up at your blog after Googling "how to remove blood stains." :-)
Good tip for those of us with dogs!! Thanks!!
I can not wait to try this! Our dog has left our poor carpet with a few doozies that nothing has been able to touch. I never heard about the salt before. Thanks for the tip!
Hi! My wife had her period and left the bed quite messy - not her fault though. I was in a panic coz the mattress was new. I tried Vanish (UK product), didn't work. Then I came across this article, put some cold water and covered the stain with table salt.
first applicaion, half come out. I'm on the second application. Have to wait and see.
TIP: If you use a vacuum cleaner afterwards, careful it doesn't come drippin back out. You'll see, its pure blood that drips out. Amazing tip!
This is a very good tip. Luckily I have laminate flooring and don’t have to worry about blood stains but if any of my friends ever have a similar problem I will be in the know.
