Removing Splinters
Recently, our 1 year old son, got a splinter in his finger.
I'm a wreck removing my own splinters (usually by tweezers) let alone one from a squirming, unreasonable toddler.
After researching, we found good tips on how to easily remove splinters:
1- Try using tape to remove it (luckily this worked).
2- If the tape fails, soak skin in warm water for 5-10 minutes to soften skin.
3- Sterilize a needle (via a match flame); remove it (easier with soft skin).
If all else fails call Grandma or the Doctor. It works for me!
Tape? Hmmmph, really? Never thought of THAT.
I'm a 'grandma caller' myself!
I havge a weird obsession for removing splinters. Not sure why that is. I have a really good set of tweezers my grandfather sharpened for me because I have thin skin and often get "hair" splinters when I cut hair--and just so you know a hair stuck in your skin as a splinter hurts like glass. Ouch.
when I saw your topic at Shannon's this is exactly what went through my mind. It works here too.
Blessings,
Karla
TAPE? Wow, I'll have to try this. H ope I remember.
I had seen this tip somewhere and then forgotten about it. Thanks for the tip and it is good to know that it has been tested. LOL My husband is the resident remover of splinters in our house. He is amazing with a pair of sharp tweezers. The kids don't even flinch. When I try it... well, let's just say I have other talents.
Tape makes sense.
Water sounds tough.
I passed out at needle.
Hmm...I might try the tape trick on my husband. He's as bad as the toddler.
Tape, first time I heard about that. Will have to try!
I'd never heard of tape before. Great tip!
Great tip on the tape--I can't imagine getting a little one to sit still while you're coming at him with a needle! What kind of tape did you use?
If tape does not work you can use Elmer's glue. Spread a little on the finger, let dry and peel off.
Great WFMW!!!!
Thanks for the helpful hints. I'll have to do tape next time.
GREAT TIP. I was also going to suggest using glue too!
once The May Queen had a splinter in her heal, and glue and tape didn't work, so my husband had to literally hold her down while I cut it out with a sterilized exacto knife. it was HORRIBLE
Great tip! We haven't had splinters yet, but I'll remember this for when we do.
Tape on splinters also works for me.
I've also used H2O2 for bubbling out those tiny little pieces left behind.
Tape? WOW, I hope it works for us too! THANK YOU.
I'd never heard of tape before. That's a new one on me. I know that for my husband, because he's got tough skin, sometimes what works for him is for me to try and pop it out like I was popping a pimple. I've been amazed at how it just pushes the stuff out enough for tweezers to get them. Good tip! Ta for now dahling!
I love the tape idea- awesome!
Tape: what a great idea!
Wow we've had lots of splinters. I wish I'd known about tape. I bet packaging tape, that really sticky stuff would work. My best splinter trick works for sound sleepers...sneak in like the tooth fairy and go to work on it!
I've heard a dot of Elmer's glue - if they can sit still long enough for it to dry. Then just peel the dot off.
Thank you so much for this information. My daughter fell about 3 weeks ago and got 8 splinters in her hand and arm. Most of them came out easily with tweezers but there were 2 that were very deep. I will keep your tips in mind for next time. The tape is so easy and the soaking in water is espeically useful for deep, stubborn ones.
Thanks, again!
My daughter is a splinter magnet! I'll have to try that!
