Memoirs of A Hanger

With the advent of summer finally here, it was time to clean out my son's closet this weekend. I know I shouldn't be so connected to his clothing but, oh, my heart is so heavy knowing he is slowly slipping through my fingers all the time.

Yes. ABBA is on my iPod for the 2 other people that actually know that song. You get worthless bonus points.

Month by month.

On a disjointed note, I can't believe (a) this boy ever fit inside my body, (b) this boy ever fit in 0-3 month clothing and (c) these hangers take over 100 years to decompose in a landfill and will out-live us all.

Excuse my mind. It's all kerflooey today. Tell me something new and exciting in your world.

aww, This made me all teary

  • Burgh Baby's Mom

Every time I have to clean out an outgrown size from The Toddler's closet, I nearly end up in tears. It's so sad to dig through a pile of reminders that they grow up so fast.

  • Head Gaggler

Yeah I feel it too. But now that my last baby is outgrown some of both her sisters and her clothes I am happy to get rid of piles of clothes taking up space in my house. I am all about downsizing storage this year!! Great shot though.

  • Leanne

I hate the fact that not only are they outgrowing their clothes but also that they now have a SAY in what I buy for them.

    So sad.

  • Wendi

    Fabulous photo.
    Wow!
I have hangers like that still in the back of the closet. I have "shared" most of the clothes, but haven't parted with the silly hangers. I am not sure why.
Thanks for hosting PSF and for visiting my blog.

  • Mel's World

Ha...that was great, especially the part about the hangers outliving us all...true!

It's hard to believe my boys ever fit inside me too...they are 12 and 14 years old now and my oldest is already 5'9" and 145 lbs...YIKES...they grow up fast.

And no, I am NOT old enough to have kids that age! *wink*

  • anglophilefootballfanatic

I know exactly what you mean. They do grow too quickly. And, 0-3? Is that a real size? There are more rubbermaids in my attic than I thought could possibly fit up there.

I have to sign in under WP, but you know I'm here:

100 years - is that right?? I have about a billion hangers in my house and I never seem to be able to find one when I need one.

    Time does fly, doesn't it?

Hope you had a good weekend - see you this week - Kellan

  • Girl

I put my Doogal across my belly this afternoon, he'll be one in a month, and all I could think was this time last year, I was begging him to come out... now I almost wish he'd be little, get back in, snort.

    Anyway, I feel ya.

  • Nap Warden

My Little Man is turning into a little boy right in front of me. I swear he grows every time I get him up from a nap. I just want him to stay my cute Little Man!

  • Laski

One for the Goodwill pile, the other 237 pieces I'll save . . .

I'm with Burgh. I'm a mental and emotional mess. I. CAN'T. LET. GO.

    And, I have a ridiculous collection of hangers . . . ridiculous.

  • CC

awwwwwwww!!! We're still in coats around here. No cleaning out the closet right now!

  • JCK

OK, you've got to email me back with the answer to the question I'm always asking...When is the coffee table book coming out!? Loved this!!!

  • Gina

I'm with flutter. I'll never look at those little hangers the same way again. Thank you for the reminder to cherish these precious moments today.

  • Margerie

I like kerflooey. I like ABBA too. My kids are growing like weeds, in spurts and bounds.... just when you are not looking- there they are, more grown up than the last minute. Bittersweet I tell ya. Kerflooey most definitely.

  • Cecily R

As teenie as they are, I have that "Oh my gosh she fit inside me??" feeling right after I give birth.

I just cleaned out a batch of clothes for all three kids. Everytime that happens I feel like having somekind of ceremony. It seems like it should be so much more meaningful. But. No ceremony. I just bag them up and pass them to their cousins instead.

    It all happens too fast.

  • Mama's Losin' It

And is it a little weird that you keep the shopping hangers?? I just throw my kids clothes on the floor...that's where they end up anyways. :)

This was sweet though...I just want to freeze time when I can still call my little guy little.

  • MetaMommy

When we left the hospital, MetaToddler was 4 days old. I took a picture of him lying on the blouse I went to the hospital in. Even then I had a hard time believing he was ever inside me. And now that there's another kicker in here, I keep trying to tell him "that was you way back when!!"

  • Toni

Oh, I am feeling your pain. I think it is a mom thing where we associate so much with the clothing of our children. The first time I gave away clothes that were my daughters (years after she had worn them), I cried. I was so upset that my friend almost wouldn't take them. I get this post completely.

  • Beth

I was brought to tears in September as I got five years worth of my kid's clothing ready for a consignment sale.

I had been hanging on to them with the hopes that we would have a third child. When I realized that it wasn't going to happen, I sadly sold the clothes.

  • Stephanie

I just did this last weekend and would stop at each piece of clothing. It brought tears to my eyes knowing my baby girl is growing up so fast. It seems almost unfair. I know exactly how you feel...

  • Toni

It is a BIG help to have one 7 years older around most of the time. She entertains him and will watch him while I do laundry, etc. But when she is done with him, she is DONE. Also, he wants to do everything she does- and screams and hits, kicks, bites when he can't. So, it is a mixed blessing...he knows she is around more already and cries after her when she leaves to play with neighbors- that part sucks.

  • lisa marie

Ah, they do grow so fast. :) My little grandson is in the 18th month size right now. But since he was 8 lbs at birth he was never tiny.

PS - Herrschners warehouse sale is coming up June 11th-15th if you're interested. :) Last year I got 10 bottles of paint for a buck, some scrapbooking papers books for 75cents and wow, just lots of stuff cheap. :)

    http://www.herrschners.com/retailstore.aspx

Now I feel like a commercial, sorry. I'm excited and just wanted to make sure my fellow WI bloggers were aware of the sale. :)

  • Jacki

Oh I remember those days....every three month s having to buy Emma a completely new wardrobe. Now, thankfully, she can fit her clothes a bit longer. So I only have to buy two new wardrobes a year.

  • Memarie Lane

    Dude ABBA Rawks!

  • Amy Y

I am a clothing bulemic ~ it makes me feel good to purge clothes... now that they aren't babies anymore. I feel overwhelmed by having too much "stuff" in our house.

Shoes were harder for me. I still have some of their first pairs!

  • Jules

Did you see Mama Mia? Hang on to the memories, throw out the hangers;)

  • Alicia

I have a little secret. I'm hoarding some clothes that I just can't seem to box up. The little 6-9 month pumpkin Halloween costume? Still hanging next to the 24 month dresses. And her first Easter dress (3-6 months)? Yep. Still there. They'll probably still be there the day she hangs up her first prom dress.

  • Stacie

    it goes too quickly!

  • Bren

Yep, it's definitely a mom thing. I can't seem to get rid of Baby's things because she's my last one. I get teary just thinking about it even though I DON'T want another one.

My laptop is home! A celebration is in order.

  • LikeAstaR

what a great picture! I just can hardly belive that I am about this journey OVER again!

  • Melanie

I always end up a basket case when it's time to clean out the closet of the clothes that are too small. That's why I keep putting it off. That and laziness.

  • Killlashandra

I can sympathize with the size thing. Mine fit in 0-3 months for the 10 days he was in the hospital. Now he grows like a weed and I swear we completely skipped the 18 month clothing stage. LOL

As for something new, you should come sign up for my giveaway. I celebrated my first year of blogging on the 7th. ;)

  • Frani

Yes. And they only slip by even faster as the years go bye so enjoy the smallness while you can. I loved that shot - SO CRISP and beautiful.

  • Kathryn

Aww. I know. It seems my youngest skipped out on months and months of clothing by going from small to huge in no time. Why do they grow so freaking fast?

  • Autumn

Tell me about it! I can't believe I am going to have a 4th grader. Almost NINE years old. It's tramatic.

And the fact that those hangers will still be in their infancy - equally tramatic>

  • Holly

Did you ever wonder if we let kids run around naked we wouldn't notice them growing so much? The sizes in three-month, then six-month, increments seems to make them grow so much faster somehow!

  • Working mum

I've just done the same. I can't bear to part with some things though: first shoes, christening robe, dress she wore at my brother's wedding, etc. It's OK to keep a few, right?

  • Jaina

Aww, that's bittersweet. Something new and fun...I helped build a patio this weekend! (random, right?)

  • Jennifer, Playgroups Are No Place For Children

It's so sad to think about all those clothes, some barely worn, sitting in a tote, never to be worn again. Sigh.

  • McMommy

That picture was CRYSTAL!!!! Nice work!!

  • Rima

Dude, I lurve me some ABBA. I have the ABBA box set and the ABBA video and I was front row center when the ABBA cover band, "Bjorn Again" came to town. But I'm not holding my breath for a real ABBA reunion.

    *Le sigh.*

  • Life As I Know It

Oh, I know! I get sad with every season change when I clean out the boys' closet.
    Cool picture!

  • Amanda

Wow! You and I always seem to be at the same stage with the toddler. I just cleaned out Aaron's cupboards on the weekend.

The thing thats new with us is actually something old. He's taken to trying to curl up on my belly and its reminding me of when he was inside. How DID all these babies fit on the inside???

  • katydidnot

urgh. i can't believe i didn't get the worthless bonus points. frick!

  • Laura@Storytellin' Mama

At first, I was organized when I only had a couple of kids. I would box and label the 0-3 and 6-9 and 9-12 and so on... I would pass the torch of clothes to the next child.

Now with four, it is a much more disorganized process, but we do hang onto somethings and pass them down the line.

I just took a giant box of clothes to goodwill and it feels good to purge their closets, but sad too!

    Great photo!

  • Krystyn

    Aww..they grow up too fast.

New and exciting? My 20 month old daughter is now in a big girl bed!!

  • Stacy

Love this colorful shot! We have a half ton of those hangers, too. I, on occassion, look at the "keepers" of the infant clothing, too. It is so hard to believe they were ever that small.

  • Elaine A.

My baby is past all these sizes too and it breaks my heart. They grow too fast! WAAAAAH!!

  • Chuck

New? I have gifts. I'm tired. I rode on the back of a motorcycle this past weekend from the desert to Long Beach. I'm back. Glad you're here. Stop by. Bye.

Oh. If you don't throw away the hangers, they won't go to a landfill. Child is getting bigger. That's wonderful. That's happy stuff.

  • Amy

sniff, sniff...yes, our babies grow way too fast. It breaks my heart sometimes and then sometimes I look at that and think, Thank God, we made it through the no sleeping stage :)

  • Kelli @ Gohn Crazy

:( It goes by much too quickly.

And I wonder if places like Carter's (speaking outlets here) would take back their hangers if you save them and return them? I am starting a stash in my basement in hopes. Hmm...

  • Nicole

At first glance I thought these were vials with colored lids... Funny. I hear you about wondering how they used to fit inside.

  • im_g

Thinking about how we also increase dress sizes along with our children... ha-ha. ;D

    Great capture. :D

  • just jamie

Just wish I could hold my babies ... again. Just rewind a few years, let me rock them and look into their baby eyes again ... then skip ahead.

I guess I'll think the same thoughts when they are off to college, so I oughta hold on to the moments we have now. After all, they're three. Wait until they're 13 right?

  • Carolyn

Kerflooey. You said kerflooey. Love it.

  • Hilary

The hangers represent those feelings well. Good job.

Just yesterday, while giving my older son a hug, I remembered and vocalized the words I used to say in my head, in wonder about him those first few months of his life.. "I pushed him out!" So I thoroughly get the concept of not believing he used to fit. He's twenty one now... sigh!

  • katherine.

so cliche....but they do grow up so fast....

    great photo too!
    (came by way of david)

  • Sandi McBride

Believe me when I say "you don't know the half of it!" My babies are 35 and 36...but when I look at them I still see children. There's no help for me!
