The Biggest Loser

My husband and I are board game junkies. Often when our son, relentlessly, surrenders to sleep we play a game. He generally defeats me in Trivial Pursuit (damn that Sports category) every single time.

I'm a Scrabble-a-holic. I've never lost a game. I've even memorized all the 2 letter combinations. My husband typically consumes all his time analyzing his word tray, only to lay down "THE" before the timer expires.

Until Sunday. He hitched an "S" to my word and got 2 triple word points.

I. am. defeated. He has perma-smirk. No, I'm not bitter about the loss.

Yes I am.

So can anyone recommend a good board game?

Oooooh - I did not get the game gene - I am not much of a game player. We do play a lot of dominos (double 15) in our family and it is a blast - even the little ones can play and the grown-ups love it. You can buy Double 15 Dominos about anywhere now (used to be hard to find)- even Walmart and maybe Target - try that one. Hope you had a good weekend. See you later. Kellan

  • Nap Warden

Monopoly junkie...buy property evey time I get the chance...love it! You also can't beat Risk...The game of world domination!!! No, I'm not competitive at all;)

  • Leanne

Ohh. That would HURT. You gotta get even. I would suggest a good game of rock, paper, scissors. :) That would seem to be all I have the time for these days. Lol!

  • Laura

If you like scrabble, try UPWORDS! It is lots of fun! Right now I am in CandyLand hell! hoping to get out soon!

Hang in there - you will win back your title...after all, it was only one game!

  • Bren

Trivial Pursuit is our favorite! Where he kills me in Sports, I make up in Entertainment. It's always a close game. The kids are getting the Disney version for Christmas and I can't wait!!

How about Outburst? We always have fun with it too.

  • The Egel Nest

He probably learned that "attach the s" maneuver from you anyway...so smirk back :)

I didn't get the game gene either, but I play Trivial Pursuit about once every ten years.....sorry I can't help!

  • penniesinmypocket

Addicted to Mexican Train and Sequence. I do love a good game ... I've been seeking out some new ones, too.

  • Family Adventure

Ouch, that sucks. Big time. Especially the perma-smirk.

    Backgammon is a good game...

    Heidi

  • CelloBella

Well I totally have the game gene. Rock on sister, I feel your pain!

Qat is my fave scrabble word.

Now where were we... yes Risk is fun but I tend to get a little emotional if my husband double crosses me...

Monopoly - always choose lucky horse and then you get all the stations.

Outburst is okay but are you looking for a two player game?

Trivial Pursuit is a good with two players.

I also love Set - which is a game played with cards - great game.

And for four people Bridge and Mahjong.

Pictionary of course... Balderdash can be fun oh and a new game I've just got called VisualEyes - which is terrific...

    Too many?

  • jennwa

My husband and I do not play board games very often, when we do play it's usually outburst and pictionary.

  • Toni

I am not much of a game player but my husband and I love to play Sequence, which should be available at any large chain store for $15 or less.

I hate, hate to be beaten by my husband. There is just something not right about that....

  • Anonymous

Dudette, get your title back! :) We love chess, Taboo and pictionary in this household.

    And yeah try Upwords!

My husband and I play Trivial pursuit, which we both love because we're so different - he gets Science; I get Literature.

Have to say, though, that our game of choice has been bowling, ever since we got the Wii.

  • Nothing Noteworthy

We like to play the Aviation edition of Monopoly once in a while (although it's been waaay too long). We've also got Othello which is fun and challenging, and we have a set of double-nine dominoes (I see someone else already mentioned Mexican Train which I actually knew as Chicken Feet).

How about some card games? The standard fare (Uno, Phase 10, Rook) and maybe even a new-to-you selection: Monopoly. Yes, there is a Monopoly card game and it's really fun!

Thanks for stopping by my blog this morning!

  • Joanna

I'm the same Scrabble junky... I graduated college as the Scrabble champion 2 years running, and HATE to lose- so I understand your sentiments.
I got SuperScrabble for Christmas a couple years ago, and I've found that, along with never being able to find someone to play with me (because the board is twice as big, with twice as many letters, and takes twice as long to play), I don't do as well at it. Maybe it's an endurance thing?

  • slouching mom

Heh. This is JUST like our house. My husband never forgets a piece of trivia, and often he's gotten six wedges in TP before I've earned one.

But Scrabble. That's my strength. While he wins sometimes, I win MORE.

For grown-ups, you mean? Because I find Labyrinth the best family game ever.

    Let's see...Othello. Backgammon.

  • Amanda

I love boardgames too. Right now, my husband and I are having nightly Boggle sessions.

  • Sarah Kimmel

Trevor and I ADORE board games... one that we have been playing a lot lately is Killer Bunnies. Just do a google search, you'll find it. It is soooo much fun! Before the dreaded holiday season when I don't get to see my husband for about two months we used to play it every night. It's seriously sooo much fun!

  • T with Honey

It really hurt when Honey won at Scrabble for the first time - English is his second language!

Have you ever tried Skip-Bo? Some ladies at my last job got me hooked and somehow I always seem to get all the Skip-Bo cards!

  • yertle

We used to play games at night too. We haven't done it in a while, we should start again. Balloon Cup and Settlers of Catan are fun for two players.

  • Anonymous

Hey, do drinking games count? I'll email them to you to keep your blog g-rated. Kidding. I love Scrabble too and UPWORDS - go get it, you'll love it. Seriously, win back your title!

    Frani

  • Teryn

Yeah, I try to avoid games. I get a little too competitive. I think I scare people.

  • ames

Oh, I love Trivial Pursuit, but yes, darn that Sports category!!

Sequence is a really fun game for all ages, but I also like The Farming Game (no one else has heard of it either) and Stratego (nothing like a well-laid out battlefield amongst friends :)

Better for a crowd though are Balderdash (the original, not the remake), Cranium, Apples to Apples (but we edit the rules to allow for arguing your case), and Settlers of Catan (3-4 players, very addictive!)

  • hydeslikeus.wordpress.com

We're Scrabblers all the way. Sorry I can't be more helpful...but damn! you guys look like a couple we'd love to play with ;) Nice Board!

  • SAHMmy Says

I don't think of myself as a sore loser but I've tipped more than a few Scrabble boards in frustration.
We've been stuck playing Star Wars Trivial Pursuit every night at the behest of my three year old...after being forced by my husband and son to watch all Episodes exactly three million and four times I can hold my own.

  • suchsimplepleasures

my husband and i used to play scrabble...all the time! he never, ever won :) which, I believe, is why we never, ever play scrabble, anymore...poor loser!

  • Andrea

I love games. I enjoy Scrabble too, but am not very good at it.

You'll get him NEXT TIME, girl!

  • Jen M.

It's not "baord" game but we LOVE Mad Gab. LOVE it.

  • Cecily R

My husband always beats me at Trivial Pursuit too! I so blame the sports category, but really it's every category. He just knows a lot of trivial stuff!

I love your Scrabble story. Love the perma-smirk line and the "THE" line. I don't know that I've ever been so entertained by a game of Scrabble!

  • Victoria

Oh, I loved Scrabble as a teen/young adult. And Monopoly too. Hubs and I don't do board games in our "alone time" (wink, wink!) but we do a lot of family games that we all enjoy (we're currently hooked on Uno).

  • Burgh Baby's Mom

I can't play board games with my husband. We are so competitive that it ends ugly, even when it's just a game of Chutes and Ladders. It should be mentioned that I play just fine with others, but he doesn't. You tell me which one of us takes the competitive spirit a little bit too far.

Lately, I've been playing Scattegories with the family. Good times, right there, good times.

  • Rima

Ha! That's so funny. You sound like the P-dog. He always beats me and also knows all the two letter words in the Scrabble dictionary.

We love board games, too, but there aren't that many for just two players. One game we always had a blast with was "Tribond", (I think you may need more than two players, though.)

  • Amy Y

You sound like my husband! who I recently began beating at Scrabble... We love it too!

Try Yahtzee... I think that one is pretty fun (and quick too!)

  • Holly

    Good for him! Awesome move.

We are total Scrabble junkies at our house. I even keep track of our scores on the sidebar of my blog. If you're on Facebook, you can play with people online...

  • painted maypole

i love rummikub and sequence, as well as clue and clue museum caper

  • Amy

I adore Scrabble & definitely UPWORDS! That game rocks! I am the Scrabble champ in our house, but am a sore and ugly loser when it comes to Monopoly.

    I hate that game :)

  • Rhonda

Just played Battleship last night. That's a good 2-person game. But, that's all I got for ya.

  • Autumn

I think linking the "s" on is strategic, but I have friends that think it's a cop-out. The rules say it's cool, correct??

  • jennifer

You already mentioned Trivial Pursuit...I love the 80's version. I can actually answer those questions. Except, of course, for the sports category. I never know any of those answers!

    Jennifer, Le Binky Bitch

  • Avery Gray

Has anyone mentioned Scattergories? It's loads of fun, and you can play it with just two people, or in a group, if that is your desire. It's a word game, so you Scrabbaphiles will love it. Trust me!

  • Marie

I wnat to try Quelf, heard it was really fun.

  • Pann

I'm still boggling (no pun intended) about never losing at scrabble. I *always* lose at scrabble, because I am always trying for a more "fun" word and not paying attention to how many points it will be worth!

  • Corey~living and loving

OH How I wish hubby would play games with me....but he is a very sore loser...so he hates games. LOL

  • Janet

It's been so long since we played a game that didn't involve the under eight set.

That said, my kids are finally on to Pictionary. Woo hoo! I love Pictionary: it appeals to my inner competitive artist.

  • Mrs. G.

A friend of mine posted about she and her husband's love of the board game. She said they were having one with a game called Anti-Monopoly. Haven't played it so I can't vouch for it's fun factor.

Just keep memorizing the Scrabble dictionary to stage a comeback...you can do it.

  • Melanie

Wow- you lost for the first time ever. He must have cheated.

  • tommie

not a board game, but we love to play Phase 10...

  • JO-N

I used to play scrabble, boggle and monopoly when I was young. Now, married with 3 kids, I sometimes play scrabble junior with my eldest. The other two kids are just too young to play this.

  • Magpie

    Wow - good one.

My favorite ever was playing STUPIDLY across two triple word scores.

I play Scrabble, on line by email, with my sister. It's not in real time, so you have lots of time to think up words with no one breathing down your neck.

  • Ed

For two? Easy. Risk is the game of champions, no iffs ands or buts.

  • Tot's Mom

Now, if only I can get my husband to play Scrabble with me... The other board game that I used to play is chess. Find it interesting though most people can't stand the game. Too slow and boring, I guess.

  • Rachel

We love board games but we have become addicted to Scene It and the Scene it Men VS Women. They're soo fun!
I know that kills when they eek that win it. Just makes ya want to pick up the board and thwack them with it.

  • Lisa

I love scrabble and can get my hubby to play once in a while.

The entire family loves mexican train dominoes. All ages can play it. It's fun for 2 to 8 players.

If we are in the mood for cards the entire family loves to play skipbo. It also is fun for 2 to 8 players.

Other favs are Upwords and yahtzee.

I also like bunko and the dice version of phase 10.

  • ZAM

I love scrabble too-with my husband. I always beat him to it. But he excels in Chess so I'm like "Let's just play Scrabble" all the time. I'm such a sire loser (gasp!). Hehhe

  • carrie

Love that you showed the board and circle the word. My best play was "clovers"--I know it was over 100 points. My husband and I are pretty competitive, so I totally gloated. We were on our honeymoon in Maui, and I ran a victory lap around the area where we were sitting!

Our favorite board game right now is Ticket to Ride--so much fun!

  • Amy

    We're big game fans -

    Set (Cards)
Phase 10 Dice (so much faster than the original)
    Yahtzee
    Settlers

Thanks for participating in this week’s Carnival of Family Life, hosted at Adventures in Juggling. Stop by and read the other wonderful entries!

Try UpWords. We've had a lot of fun with it!

  • Holly

How'd I miss this one? You MUST join us on Facebook. We play Scrabble ALL the time. I am bad. I would make you happy as you'd always beat me.
