Lightapalooza - Cast Your Vote
Lightapalooza has officially started. We're stringing the lights and hating every minute of it.
Each year my husband feels the need to drill me with the same question. In which I reply with the same answer. Each year. Every year.
"What difference does it make if we mix clear and multi-colored lights?"
I'm all for multi-colored lights on 1 side (or room) and clear lights on the other; but not together. And certainly, horror of all horrors, not strung together on a single tree! It's like wearing brown shoes with a black outfit. Be still my logical heart.
Perhaps I'm wrong (yet again). Help me settle this once and for all.
Do you think clear lights and multi-colored lights can be mixed together?

No, you can't mix lights. In our house it's clear lights on the tree. It's colored on the house unless you use icicles and then it's white too.
My boys want us to do lights on our house and it would look gorgeous if we did (kind of gingerbread-ish), but we don't have a ladder tall enough. :(
ABSOLUTELY NOT girlfriend. You are so right. This is such a guy thing. My husband TRIES (TRIES) to pull the same thing. DENIED! Every year. :)
Nope! No mixing. See ya.
My husband, trying to compete with the neighbors, went out and bought a whole bunch of white lights in different styles this year, but we have a gazillion color lights already. When he asks my opinion, I simply say, "do what you want to." If that means mixing white and color, it makes me no difference as long as I don't have to string 'em up.
Ugh...no, no, no. Sorry, Dad! It's one or the other.
My husband's favorite trick was throwing a net of lights over everything...the wall, the tree, the baby. Just cuz it's easy doesn't make it right.
I'm just saying ;-)
OMG! No! No! This is my biggest holiday pet peeve! PLEASE DON'T MIX THE LIGHTS!
Oh no. I do mix lights on my tree. I like lights, lots of lights. But I do only have white light on the outside.
Nope, no mixing allowed!
For years, I used clear lights and last year, I got colored ones at the kids' request. My husband feels the clear ones are now going to waste because they aren't being used. Must be a "guy thing."
no mixing of the lights.....Since I am doing the decorations solo this year, there will be no lights on the house. I am doing good to get the insides done!!
I'm all for the same color lights...sorry Husband;)
I'm with YOU. This was a topic at my parent's last week. My dad's tree is decorated with both kinds & has a remote control to pick color, white, or both. Mom and I always put on white. Dad & Pup? Color. The baby? Thought the remote was a game and turned them on and off until we took it away. There is too much stress over lights, no?
You are so right - men just don't get these things! That is why my boys walk out of the house with purple shirts and orange pants when hubby is in charge of dressing them.
I happen to agree.
But I don't like trees that are lit up with just one color -- even if it's just white.
I also really hate blinking lights. Ever!
I cant decide which lights I like best any more, at first it was white lights, then multi-colored, now I think I like the dark blue the best.
Sorry... I mix. :) My tree has both colored and white lights... I'm all for intergration! It's the new frontier! Like a previous commentor said. I love lights. Any and all will do!
no, no, no! you would have to be really artful to make this work, I think, and I am guessing your husband is not artful about this, just lazy.
Every year my sons ask Mike "Can we have coloured lights this year?" and every year he says "No, your mother's decree."
You are a better woman than me. I won't even allow coloured lights inside the house.
And mixed? Oh the horror!
Heidi
Nope...no mixed lights. Well, it'd be ok if they were in different rooms! Husbands are just like that...no sense of color!
My Hubby and I sat for about an hour trying to find THE ONE BULB that was out- I finally threw in the towel (me leg fell asleep sitting on the floor) and threw that string of lights away. Somehow I am the designated light puter-upper, therefore I decide which lights go up...I say no mixing. I'm even a scrooge about blinking, makes me a bit dizzy.
Can I give a resounding Hell No from the South?
Never, Never!!
That would be like... mixing The Cowboys and The Colts and telling them to play nicely.
It's just against all things natural :-) LOL!
Can you say Trailer Park Trash? And, just for the record, my husband agrees with your husband. Men!!
Multi-colored lights on the inside (tree) and white lights outside. Or vice versa. Your choice :-)
Hell no! :)
We have clear lights. All of them. I don't mind the mix though...maybe. I don't know. I am franly just mesmerized by the pretty lights. Ohhh. Pretty!!! I'm such a goldfish this time of year! :)
I put both on my tree. I like the white and colors together. I didn't know it was so uncouth.
no, no, no!! no mixing of colors! Everyone knows that ;)
I'm with you on this one. No no no no no. Honestly I don't really like colored lights, but I can deal with them as long as you are not mixing.
No, no, no -- you're completely right. But I think it's something my husband would try to do, too.
I'm also very against all one color lights -- especially red or blue. Multi or white. I love christmas lights, even if I have to hang them myself.
Used to be all for the traditional, formal white light only look. Then came the kiddos! Now it's more like when Buddy the Elf decorates Gimbel's! A hodgepodge of everything from Wedgwood ornaments to reindeer Beanie Babies--a little garish but fun fun fun!
No, no mixing lights. No icicle lights either.
Oh, and get up on the roof too hubby! I love the peaks decorated, but first - is the insurance paid up?
No, no, no.
I mean it. Don't make me come down there.
No, please. No mixing please. I beg you. ;D
I am sort of a clear light snob. I can do a red and green mix SOMETIMES... but I do not think that blue is a christmas color and should be on lights. That is so mean I know. I really don't mind it so much on other people's houses... just nEVER on mine. See.. I told you I am a snob.
I don't know if there is a right way or a wrong way of doing it. It seems like it defeats the purpose a bit to mix them, but what do I know!
Personally, I miss the colored lights. I grew up with them on our tree and my husband and I have always had the white lights. I think this year we're going to break out and get colored ones. Whoohooo...gettin' crazy now!
No mixing on the tree. Never! It's just wrong.
Now, we have a mix of lights on the house. Multi-colored on the eaves, white on the windows and the tree out front. That works. But not on the tree. No way!
When buying a tree this year I bought a tree that was prelit with both clear and multicolor. I was pleasantly surprised on how good it looks (http://www.sabennett.com/wp/?p=1547). But I have sort of a "fun" tree. If you were doing something more traditional, I don't think it would look good. So I think it depends on the theme of the tree.
I love clear light, I think I'm boring... ;P
My husband wanted to put white swag lights on one side of the outside of the house and colored icicle lights on the other side. I bout shot him. I like it the same all over the edges of the roof. We already live in a duplex and are only decorating one half of it so its already weird. Men can only think about the labor of the lights going up, not the image of the finished product.
oooh, no mixing!!
Thanks for participating in the December 3, 2007, edition of the Carnival of Family Life, hosted at http://www.imaginif.com.au!

ok, my anal little brain would definately say NO WAY can they be mixed. HOWEVER, we did do this outside one year due to running out of colored lights and the mixture of both strands evenly dispursed (it wasn't like colored on one side and white on the other) actually turned out kinda pretty.
